Insights: May Birthstone

A talisman is an object believed to possess spiritual or magical properties intended to bring good fortune, enhance positive energy, or grant power and protection to its owner. They have existed in practically every culture throughout documented history, and the May birthstone is an excellent choice of talisman that will connect with you on a personal level, each one having unique properties and historical significance. The May birthstone is Emerald.

Whether you’re a Taurus or Gemini, an Emerald is a powerful birthstone for those born in May. This gorgeous green precious stone has a rich legacy as one of humanity's most revered gemstones, and has been worn as a talisman for attracting wealth, revealing truths and improving eloquence. You can see why royalty and powerful figures in many ancient cultures kept them. One of the most known was the legendary Cleopatra, who seized control of the “Emerald Mountains” located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. As well as wearing her Emeralds as jewellery, she and many ancient Egyptians believed them to represent fertility and rebirth, and often this green May birthstone was buried with their dead to symbolise eternal youth.

The May birthstone also has historical and spiritual connections with the heart chakra. This makes a necklace that features an Emerald stone a particularly perfect piece of jewellery to go for. Wearing it close to your heart will help boost its said power, and heal emotional wounds and open your heart to more love and compassion. This makes it a perfect gift for someone special whose birthday is in May. Emeralds today are also given for 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries, and it can make an even more significant gift if your spouse is also connected to a May birthstone.

Emeralds rate (7.5 - 8\) on the Mohs scale, making them durable enough for daily wear, though a little more prone to chipping than diamonds. Emeralds almost always feature natural inclusions, known as jardin. It is exceptionally rare to find a completely flawless emerald, which makes ones that are highly valuable. The most famous emerald in the world is the Rockefeller Emerald, which is both the largest flawless emerald and the most expensive at 5.5 million USD. The Rockefeller Emerald is from the Colombian mines, and the country alone supplies roughly 90% of all gem quality emeralds.

Keep an eye out for an emerald collection in the future! Currently we are obsessed with the beautiful colours of sapphire jewellery, which are one of the best options for pieces thanks to their hardness. If you already have emeralds you want to upcycle or want to make a request, please reach out.
