What Valentine’s Day Means to Me

As the 14th of February rapidly approaches, it has led me to think about what Valentines day means to me this year and how it doesn't just need to be for lovers.

My very first memories of Valentine’s Day are very special envelopes on the doormat. As a child, every year, there would be a Valentine’s card arrive, always posted rather than handed over, always anonymous, and always followed by a knowing, loving smile later that day. Of course, a small part of me hoped it might secretly be from the “hottie” in the year above at school, but truthfully, I adored that it was from Dad. It was gentle, kind, and full of warmth and it sets the tone for the love I treasure this February 14th.

Valentine’s Day has evolved so much over time. Its origins trace back to ancient Rome and the story of Saint Valentine, often associated with secret marriages and devotion. Over centuries it became a celebration of romantic love, but in truth, it represents something far wider and far more meaningful. Love isn’t only about partners or grand gestures. It is about connection in all its forms. Love for family, love for friends, love for community, and perhaps most importantly, love for ourselves.

This year especially, Valentine’s feels very different to me. It feels softer and more reflective. It’s a reminder that love shows up in quiet ways. A supportive message from a friend, a shared laugh over coffee, a hug, or taking a moment to honour your own journey and growth.

Jewellery is one of the most beautiful symbols of love. It carries both beauty and longevity. Unlike flowers that fade or chocolates that disappear, jewellery establishes itself as part of someone’s story. It’s worn through milestones, ordinary days, celebrations and challenges. It holds memory and intention. Wearable reminders of affection, appreciation and self-worth. Whether it’s a gift from a partner, a token between friends, or a piece chosen purely for yourself, jewellery marks a moment and captures a sentiment. My molten and Puffy heart collections are make treasured symbols of love in all its wonderful forms.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t need to look one particular way. It can be romantic, but it can also be playful, familial, or deeply personal. It might be about gifting someone special a meaningful piece from a collection, writing a heartfelt note, or simply acknowledging your own achievements and treating yourself to something that makes you feel strong and beautiful.

A different and special way to celebrate love is through shared experience rather than just shared things. Spending time together, learning, creating and laughing builds memories that last far beyond a single day. A jewellery making experience day is a perfect example of this. Sitting side by side, shaping metal, choosing textures, and crafting something unique becomes a shared story you both carry forward.  Gathering your friends and family for a Jewellery workshop day is the perfect way to mark your love and friendship.

Ultimately, Valentine’s Day is what we choose to make it. It can be a celebration of partnership, friendship, family bonds, or the quiet but powerful act of self-love. It can be a day of giving, receiving, or simply appreciating. And whether that love is expressed through a carefully chosen piece of jewellery, a handmade creation, or a simple card on the doormat, it is the sentiment behind it that truly lasts.
