Insights: January Birthstone

Today we're talking all about the January birthstone - or, more accurately, January birthstones. Did you know that there are different birthstones for January?
One of the most common birthstones attributed to the month of January is the garnet. Garnet is famous for its deep red hue, which is where it originally got its name, as the word garnet is reportedly taken from the latin word for 'pomegranate seed'. The deep red colour of the gemstone makes it a great symbol of passion, deep love, and loyalty.
Of course, much like sapphires, garnets are also available in a multitude of different colours from pinks, oranges and yellows - all with different meanings that can be attributed, allowing you to reflect your own personality in your january birthstone jewellery.
As well as garnets, a popular alternative January birthstone is the rose quartz, which has a soft pastel pink hue. Rose Quartz is a soft, semi-precious stone with a cloudy appearance, perfect for representing a mother's love and emotional healing.
Both garnet and rose quartz look incredible when set into 9ct gold jewellery as well as sterling silver jewellery, so you can perfect your own piece and have something you'll never want to take off. Here at Lulu and Boo, we only ever use 100% recycled precious metals and all jewellery is solid - never plated - giving you something you can treasure forever.
In line with our sustainability values, where possible we source our gemstones from reputable suppliers that offer full traceability - check out our blog on how we source gemstones to see more about our efforts.
January birthstone jewellery has become a popular gift to give - not just for people who have birthdays in January, but also for mothers of new babies born in January, as well as to lovers as anniversary gifts, symbolising the 'birth' of a new relationship.
We can make you all sorts of different january birthstone jewellery that can feature your choices of gemstones, simply contact us. If you are looking for a ring to wear daily, we recommend looking instead at sapphire jewellery, as sapphires are much harder (and therefore more durable) than Garnets, being a 9 on the Mohs scale compared to a 6.5/7.5 of a garnet.
